Seven people were killed and more than 50 were injured after a fire broke out at building in Mumbai’s suburban area Goregaon west on October 6.
“A massive fire started around 3.10 a.m. at Jay Bhavani building in Goregaon West’s Azad Nagar locality. The injured were taken to two hospitals, Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Hospital and Cooper Hospital, in Mumbai,” an official from Mumbai’s civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said.
The official confirmed that the fire was extinguished after nearly four hours, around 6.54 a.m. Out of the seven dead, there are two minors and from those injured, 22 were men and 28 females, including one minor.
The official said, the fire burnt down shops, scrap material, cars on the ground floor. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
A Fire Officer said Jay Building was constructed in 2006 under the Slum Rehabilitation scheme and had no fire-fighting system. The lift was old and significant amount of smoke travelled through lift duct.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Pained by the loss of lives due to a fire mishap in Mumbai’s Goregaon. Condolences to the bereaved families. I pray that the injured recover soon. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected. An ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given ₹50,000”
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said, “I am continuously talking with Municipal Commissioner and Police…What happened is unfortunate. I express my condolences to those who died. The government will provide monetary help of ₹5 lakh to their families... Those who are injured will be given treatment by the government.”
